Do you like watching Shark Tank? It’s really interesting to watch how various start-up founders impress the ‘Sharks’ with their innovations and business plans, Right?
For start-ups, scouting for the right growth-stage company can be a daunting and time-consuming task. ABCXchange, a UK based fintech start-up company wanted to make the process seamless and efficient. So, they invented Alfred!
Start-ups can think of Alfred as their very own “Spotify” or “Netflix” for discovering growth stage companies raising capital. Just like how Spotify curates personalized playlists based on your music taste or how Netflix recommends TV shows and movies based on your viewing history, Alfred uses a cutting-edge AI-based matching algorithm to connect start-ups with the right growth-stage companies.
So, no more scrolling through endless lists of applications and pitch decks or attending numerous pitch meetings. Alfred does all the heavy lifting.
Let’s have a look at my journey of enhancing the user experience of the Alfred portal.
Start-Up Form
ABCXchange had purchased a website template for the MVP version of their Alfred portal. But soon, they realised the need to get these screens redesigned to enhance the user experience and also to create a unique brand identity.
They already had a basic design system and brand guidelines ready. This is how the old screens for start-up form looked like…

The entire portal looked monotonous and bland. There was no freshness or strong brand identity. It had many hierarchical issues as well.

The Client wanted to achieve a modern and unique look in a very limited budget. Most of the stock images are already overused and expensive. So after a lot of brainstorming, we decided to use the AI generated images.
But it was not as easy as it sounds. Even after trying multiple prompts, free AI generation tools were not able to produce the images we really desired. So, instead of wasting time on generating new images, we decided to get the images from the huge gallery of already generated images.
Firstly, I spent hours on finding relevant images.

And then, I edited them to match with the brand colours.

And here are the results! This is how the screens look now…


Once the desktop version was ready, I worked on the mobile versions as well.

Dashboard Screens
Alfred uses a massive language model similar to GPT to analyze current investment portfolio and preferences, including countries, investment size, funding stage, keywords, and more. It then combines this data to match start-ups with growth-stage companies that are the perfect fit for their needs.
ABCXchange then displays a list of recommended companies on the user dashboard. Their old dashboard had many flaws.

Mascot Design
Mascot design was a very quick exercise. It was done in hardly 2 hours. The client wanted something that is simple, fun and has a human connect. So, I did a really quick research on competitor brands and came up with an idea. As Alfred is an algorithm, I decided to tweak the ABCXchange’s logo and created a robot as their mascot. Here are a few design variations and the final mascot.

Takeaways
Challenges
- Client had a very limited / no budget for purchasing stock images
- Free AI generation websites were generating inappropriate (funny and stupid) images which were of absolutely no use
- Looking for already generated AI images that will suit the brief and then converting them to match with the brand colours was very time consuming.
Impact
- Unique and strong brand identity was achieved
- User experience was enhanced
- Brand recall value got increased
- Mascot added a human touch to the interactions
What I learnt
- Thanks to this project, I started using ChatGPT & explored various websites like Lexica, Dall-E, DeepAI etc. for AI image generation
- Generating multiple AI images by putting various prompts was so much fun! (Few results were too hilarious!… had a really good laugh about it)
- I also learnt to find out the ways and quick fixes to achieve good results even when the Client has a really tight budget
